BCWax

Bandcamp introduce their “unlabel” BCWax:

Yes, the world still contains a few people who want their music on CD or vinyl simply because it’s CD or vinyl. However, we’re fast approaching the point at which the convenience of digital files is preferred by everyone, and in order to sell, the physical version must offer something the digital does not. It must somehow be made into an object that every one of your fans has to own, has to hold while they listen to your music, and has to show to all of their friends. It must be transformed from a disposable good into something your fans will fetishize.

Their first release is Love. Life. Ukulele. by ukulele player / singer / songwriter Sophie Madeleine.

Congratulations to Bandcamp on a successful first outing, may a lot of beautiful LPs follow! And now music:

Panorama

My issue of the San Francisco Panorama just arrived. What a treat!

Gaga for Gaga

For the 30th anniversary gala of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art on 14 November, Francesco Vezzoli’s Ballets Russes Italian Style (The Shortest Musical You Will Never See Again) featured a performance by Lady Gaga that defied parody. Wearing a hat designed by Frank Gehry and a mask designed by Baz Luhrmann, Gaga played on a rotating Pepto-Bismol-pink Steinway grand piano decorated with blue butterflies painted by Damien Hirst while Prada-clad dancers from the Bolshoi Ballet pliéd around her. In other words, an average Saturday night.

Great piece on Gaga in the always great London Review Blog.

GF1

This seems to be an insanely brilliant camera. Nice range of lenses, very compact, great images.

iPhone apps

Apps I use every day:

McSweeny’s: wonderful short stories and multimedia content from the makers of McSweeny’s magazine.
http://iphone.mcsweeneys.net/

Instapaper Pro: Save long articles for later and read them on a distraction free screen. Also comes in a free basic version.

Tweetie 2: My Twitter client of choice. Twitterriffic is nice, too, but I prefer Tweetie because of its uncanny speed.

Facebook: I actually prefer the iPhone-facebook over the web-interface.

Fever: Not really an app, it’s an iPhone friendly interface for my self-hosted RSS-reader.

Apps I use every other day:

RunKeeper: Helps me keep track of my cycling activity.
http://runkeeper.com/

Mobile Fotos: Does a better job at uploading images to flickr than the flickr app itself.
http://mobilefotosapp.com/

Things: Very well designed to-do list app. It syncs with Things on my mac. To-do: Write more to-do lists.

Dropbox: Great companion app to the already great online storage service Dropbox.

Ego: Tracks statistics of all my online endeavours and displays them beautifully.

Convert: Elegant, fun to use unit and currency conversion calculator.

Reference:

Jamie Oliver 20-minute-meals: Haven’t tried one of the recipes yet, but the app looks just gorgeous. The recipes are presented in Jamie’s trademark accessible style.

Wijngids: iPhone version of Nicolaas Klei’s bestselling Dutch supermarket wine guide.

Typography: Well designed typography reference book. Covers all the basics of the topic and has all kinds of useful resources for print- as well as web-typography.

Games:

Ramp Champ: Beautiful game where you have to flick balls up a ramp to hit goals. The concept is simple and appeals to the casual gamer, but winning all the trophies will cause some frustration and definitely requires skill.
http://rampchamp.com/

Galcon: One of the first games I bought and still one of my favorites. Conquer a galaxy with your armada of spaceships. You can play against the computer or, much more fun, online against players all over the world. A single game takes 1-5 minutes to play.

Rolando, Rolando 2: Very cute series of games about a gang of round creatures that you roll around lush levels by tilting your iPhone. Less casual than the other games as there’s a narrative involved and some of the levels are pretty hard. Beautiful graphics and cool soundtrack by Mr Scruff.
